Formating External Hard Disks and Thumb Drives on Linux.

By | August 19, 2016

Formating in Ubuntu Linux is easy like in windows. There are applications several applications that could be used to format any removable thumb drives. Here we would be using the default ‘disk’ utility that ships with Ubuntu.

Open the disk program. Click the Ubuntu icon on the upper-left corner of the unity desktop (or you could simply press the “SUPER”/Windows Key) and type in disk. Select the ‘Disk’ icon – a spanner on hard drive.

1

Select the thumb drive to be formatted. All the device mounted on the system would shown on the left panel of the window. Be careful here, so you don’t select the hard drive where your operating system is installed. Here I want to format a 8GB thumb drive and it is shown as the last entry here.

2

Format the drive. Click on the interlocked gears symbol at the bottom of the “Volumes” area.

3

Then you’re asked if you really want to format as a security measure, you can accept if you want to.

Then a dialogue box/windows appear where you can set the different options the drive would be formatted with. In the “Erase” field input select the: “Don’t overwrite existing data” option. And in the “Type” field where you select the type of file system for drive choose: “Compatible with all systems and devices (FAT)” – it is the default file system for thumb flash drives. And then you finally select the name/label for the thumb drive and click “Format…”.

Then you’re done.

The same methods can be used to also format external hard drives, as shown below.
